Oliver will navigate through a series of obstacles to help raise money for Make-A-Wish® Canada

July 22, 2019, TORONTO ― On Saturday, July 27, Make-A-Wish® recipient and ambassador, Oliver, will take on The 5K Foam Fest obstacle course at Dagmar Ski Resort in Ontario to help raise money for Make-A-Wish Canada.

Oliver, 8, lives with osteogenesis imperfecta, a genetic disorder known as brittle bone disease. He has had to endure several broken bones and multiple surgeries, and miss out on life events because of his disease. Oliver’s mom, Natalie, says it’s heartbreaking to see her son miss out on things with friends and family. “We adjust and adapt to whatever is thrown at him.”

Last year through Make-A-Wish, Oliver travelled to Hawaii with his family where his dream to see a real volcano came true.

“When Oliver learned he would receive a wish, he was so proud and honoured to be able to share it with his family,” says Natalie. “The wish was an amazing adventure where we were all together, having fun and enjoying a number of activities that we would have never experienced otherwise. His wish began with a tour of the cockpit and a warm reception including a real flower lei in Hawaii. We stayed in a beautiful hotel, visited a waterfall, attended a dinner luau, saw endangered seals and watched a turtle being tagged for science research. The highlight of the trip was when Oliver was able to take a helicopter ride over the actual volcanoes in Hawaii that he had been watching on TV.”

As a Make-A-Wish ambassador, Oliver will participate in this year’s 5K Foam Fest to help grant wishes for children with critical illnesses. His involvement in the obstacle course proves you can do anything you set your mind to.

Most of Oliver’s big events in his life are spent anticipating surgeries or recovering from them. Having a wish to look forward to was so important to him. Oliver and is family hope that his story will inspire people to donate to Make-A-Wish to help create more life-changing wishes.

Natalie shares, “We are excited to participate in The 5K Foam Fest event this year because it is a fun way to give back to an amazing organization. We know that Oliver won’t be able to participate in some of the obstacles, but he will be able to do most of them. We bought a special backpack carrier for Oliver so that my husband and I can take turns carrying him through the course when he can’t manage it on his own. We are very excited to be part of this and Oliver is looking forward to going through the obstacles and the foam.”

For the second year in a row, Make-A-Wish Canada is the charity of choice for The 5k Foam Fest Canadian tour. In 2018, more than 65,000 people participated nationwide, raising more than $90,000 to support wishes. This year, the fundraising goal is set at $100,000. Make-A-Wish Canada will receive all money raised through participant fundraising and revenue generated by the 365 Sports Gear Check at all Canadian 5K Foam Fest events.
