Avalon's Wish to go to Ireland

Last year 17-year-old Avalon was diagnosed with a Anti-NMDA (N-methyl D-aspartate) receptor encephalitis causing her to spend a significant amount time in hospital, at doctor’s visits, and having ongoing treatments.

With a passion for history and dreams of travels, Avalon wished for a trip to Ireland. Imagine Avalon’s surprise when her parents came to school on her 17th birthday with a beautiful bouquet of green balloons and shamrocks and told her that Make-A-Wish was going to send her to the Emerald Isle.

A month later Avalon and her father were on their way, beginning their journey in Dublin – exploring and experiencing the history, culture and music that surrounded them.

They toured the rolling green hills, explored the coast, and visited historic Blarney Castle. They were treated like royalty at every stop and enjoyed an overnight stay in a castle. The rest of the tour included a visit to Waterford Crystal, dinner at Limerick Castle, and Irish dancing shows.

Avalon describes the trip as beyond her expectations. Thank you to our amazing partners at Collette Vacations who not only planned the amazing trip, but had surprises lined up at every stop, ensuring a wish as enchanting as the beautiful island of Ireland.

“2013 started off as the most horrible year of my life, but thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, I can say that 2013 was the best year of my life.” ~ Avalon
